Ronald McDonald thanks students for helping others

The students of Anderson Elementary met one of the most recognizable figures in American pop culture Thursday afternoon as a reward for a fundraising project.

Ronald McDonald stopped by the elementary campus to entertain and congratulate the approximately 700 students and employees who attend and work at the school.

The visit was a special reward to the students, who raised $1,819 during the Donate Educational Supplies for Kids (DESK) Penny Drive, which began in early January and continued until the end of March.

According to Ronald McDonald, 30,000 children need school supplies every year, and the DESK program supports more than 24 districts by providing supplies like pens, pencils, paper, crayons, glue and more.

The students in Marilyn Van’s class received an extra special honor on Thursday for being the class which raised the most money out of all classes at Anderson Elementary. Van’s students were included in the filming of a DESK commercial which will air on television at a later date.

The children also received T-shirts, sports drink bottles and certificates of appreciation for their hard work during the DESK Penny Drive.
