Christian rock acts show Christmas spirit

PORT ARTHUR —  Local Christian hard rock and metal band 70Times7 wants to do its part in helping make Christmas a little brighter for area children this Saturday.

70Times7 will perform a special fundraising concert for area Toys for Tots branches this Saturday night at King’s Cue Stick in Port Arthur for ages 18 and older. Admission to the show is $5 or a new, unwrapped toy. Special guests include local band Higher Domain and the San Antonio-based outfit, Prophet Within.

Greg Hayes, vocalist and bassist for 70Times7, said the event will help support the Orange and Jefferson County branches of Toys for Tots and hopes the public will make the effort to support this event because Christmas is just around the corner.

“This isn’t about us,” Hayes said. “All the bands involved are doing this for others, not for what we can make for ourselves. This is all about operating in the true spirit of the season.”

Hayes said a prime example of showing true Christmas spirit comes from the bandmembers in Prophet Within.

“Prophet Within is driving in from five hours away, playing the show, and then turning around and driving five hours back. They come not expecting a single dime because they know that making a kid happy at Christmas, that might not otherwise get that experience, is worth more than anything.”

Plans for this event began earlier this fall, but the agreement with the original venue location fell through. Everything was up in the air until mid-November when King’s Cue Stick came to the rescue.

“We just can’t thank them enough,” Hayes said. “Without them agreeing to this, we might not have got this opportunity to be a blessing other people, to children that we might never even get to meet.”

The doors open at 8 p.m. with Higher Domain opening the show, followed by 70Times7 and Prophet Within headlining the event. Hayes said with these three bands, it should be a fun and extremely entertaining night of music. Best of all it’s for a great cause.

“We’re really looking forward to this and are hoping for a decent turnout to benefit the kids,” Hayes added. “A chance to help others while getting to listen to great music? Sounds like a win-win to me.”
