PORT ARTHUR —
A Mid-County musician is one step closer to making his dream a reality.
David Joel, a 32-year-old Port Neches resident, has joined Bou Boyz Entertainment and will sign a recording contract with the fledgling outfit at a special event later this month.
David has built a strong reputation as a solid performer and musician and that hard work has paid off by being the first artist to join the record company. He will sign his contract at the Capri Club on Saturday, Sept. 21, and then perform afterwards with special guests.
In a telephone interview, David, said he has been a fan of music his whole life and has been performing since the age of 9. A big part of that was his parents as his dad played guitar and his mother would sing at church.
However, of all things, it was television show which proved to be the catalyst in his desire to pursue his dream.
“I was watching this episode of ‘20/20’ about two years ago, and it was about a career hospice nurse who wrote a book,” David said in a telephone interview. “It was about her encounters with people on their deathbeds. The majority of those people she worked with said their number one regret was not chasing their dreams. That stayed with me for days after that show. I finally told my wife I had to give being (a musician) a try because I didn’t want to look back on it and regret not at least trying.”
David wasted little time upon deciding to pursue his dream and quickly booked his first showcase, an acoustic performance at Starvin’ Marvin’s Bar and Grill in Beaumont, where he made $100 for an evening of music.
“That was my start, and I ended up playing 177 shows in my first year,” David added. “I’m just now starting my third year of really playing music and I have been blessed immensley. My band is so good too. I get to sing and show off, but those guys are the real brass tacks. They are the ones that shine.”
David’s road to obtaining his recording contract started earlier this spring when he headed across the Sabine River to Lake Charles, La. for a Sunday afternoon gig at Mary’s Lounge.
“I almost didn’t go. My buddy, who was going to play with me, couldn’t make the show, but I found someone else to sit in at the last minute,” he explained. “I met this guy there, who came up and talked to me and told me he was a hit songwriter and all this stuff. I really didn’t take him too seriously at first because you never know who people really are or what they are telling you. When I left, he came up and talked to me again and gave me his name and number.)
David said it was a day or two later when he thought about the man, Randy Boudreaux, again and decided to research the individual on the Internet. What he found amazed him.
Boudreaux is credited with writing more than 70 published songs, including hits for artists such as Tracy Lawrence, Joe Nichols and David Kersh, and other songs for Clay Walker, Doug Stone, Chris Cagle, Rhett Akins, Sammy Kershaw and even the legendary George Jones.
He is also an award winning producer, for which he is actually more well known. In 1997, Boudreaux received the GMA Dove Award for “Country Album of the Year” for his production work on Jeff Silvey’s album, “Little Bit of Faith.”
“I was amazed Randy had expressed an interest in me. When I called him a couple of days later, he said he felt like we could do a lot of good things together and that he, along with his son, Jordan, wanted to sign me.”
David is in the studio currently working on his debut album and hopes to have it completed “as soon as possible.” In the mean time, he will continue performing at shows across the area, both acoustic performances and full band showcases.
He will officially sign his contract at 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Capri Club in Port Arthur. Following the signing, David will perform an intimate acoustic concert for his friends, family and fans. Boudreaux will perform some of the hit songs he is credited with, and Jordan Boudreaux will perform original songs and cover songs too.
David is the first artist to be signed with the new label based out of Lake Charles, and he hopes this is just the start of a successful trend for himself and, possibly, other artists in the region.
“I’m blown away this is happening. Music is fun for me, but it’s a business too, and I know that,” David stated. “It’s a real blessing.”
