A special tribute event is on tap this Saturday for a country music legend.
A “Southeast Texas Tribute to George Jones” will be held starting at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 13 at Benoit’s Louis Hall, 3085 State Highway 12 in Vidor. The event is suitable for the whole family and admission is free.
Many area musicians will be in attendance and participating in Saturday’s tribute event, including Texas Thunder and BB and Company which will perform a variety of country music and George Jones classics. Kevin Adams will also be in attendance Saturday, and various other songwriters which have contributed to Jones success.
There will also be a lot of memorabilia on location Saturday which is sure to please the most avid Jones fan, including one report of the owner of George Jones first guitar, which he had at eight-years-old, bringing the instrument for display. Also, photos from Jones career will also be available for viewing and many are reported to have been never seen before.
Many of Jones family members who still reside in the Vidor-area will be in attendance, plus Jones only living sister, Helen Scroggins, is scheduled to make an appearance.
Jones, a legend in country music with a career spanning nearly 60 years, is a native of Southeast Texas. He died April 26, 2013, at the age of 81 after being hospitalized on April 18 with fever and irregular blood pressure.
Jones has recorded over 150 hit songs, both solo and duets, during his storied and often newsmaking career. This includes 14 No. 1 singles during a span of five decades such as “White Lightning,” “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” “The Door” and more.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event and the proceeds from the sales will be donated to The Giving House, a local charitable organization in Vidor.
