ORANGE — Local blues musicians Paul Orta and Little Ray Ybarra are returning to their roots with the release of this newest album.

The Paul Orta and Little Ray Ybarra Duo will celebrate the release of the new CD, “Back Porch Blues,” with a concert this Saturday night, Feb. 8, at the Lucky Longhorn Casino, near the Texas Longhorn Entertainment Complex, in Vinton, La. Ages 21 and older are able to attend.

Orta described this new album, which features his partner in music and guitarist, “Little” Ray Ybarra, as a return to his blues roots.

“The new CD is more like the old way of recording, before whole groups recorded,” Orta explained. “It’s like those early recordings made by artists like the duo Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee, or Doctor Ross who was a one-man band on the Sun label. In fact, I started off playing as a duo with just a guitarist and myself, But when I moved to Austin, I decided I needed a whole group.”

The new 12-song compact disc features three new tracks written by Orta, as well as his interpretations of classic material by legendary blues Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed and Doctor Ross.

“I recorded songs by Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and Willie Dixon on this CD because they wrote the book,” Orta stated. “I know about a dozen Jimmy Reed songs, and he has the same birthday as me, so, I said to myself, I need to cover his songs. And Doctor Ross was one of the first one-man band artists, so I had to include a song by him.”

As if Orta will not be busy enough with touring and promoting his new album, plans are in the works for a new concert DVD featuring Orta and Ybarra.

“I have made several videos before, including a VHS recording with U.P. Wilson for the English label, Red Lighting, but this will be my first DVD,” Orta added. “We are planning to record the DVD in either Austin or Kerrville in April, which is right before the European tour we have scheduled for Spain and France. Both are things we are very excited about. We think this is going to be a good year.”
