Nederland’s own ‘American Idol’

NEDERLAND — Though it may not hit TVs nationwide, a local singing competition is looking for the next big star. No there isn’t a lucrative contract involved, but there is the pride associated with singing the National Anthem at the Nederland 4th of July Fireworks Extravaganza.

The idea came during a meeting at the Nederland Chamber of Commerce about their fireworks show, according to Kelli Ellis, membership director for the chamber.

“We were brainstorming on some things to get the community and the rest of Southeast Texas involved and it was during American Idol, so I thought it would be fun to have our area talent try out,” said Jenny Akins, chamber president.

Ellis echoed Akins’ excitement while talking about how great it was to see different age levels come in and show off their talent. The youngest contestent so far is nine and the oldest is in their mid-20s.

Three judges will size up the competition and determine who the best candidate for the job will be. Judges for the event will be Blue Broussard of the Blue Broussard Band, Blythe Cox and Rick Danna.

Anyone interested in participating in the contest for their chance to sing the National Anthem at the fireworks extravaganza must enter by May 29. For Entry forms call the chamber office at (409) 722-0279 or download them at www.nederlandtx.com.

Auditions will be held Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the chamber’s community room.
