Special to The Leader
The Lamar University Department of Theatre and Dance will present its spring dance concert “Periphery” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 11 and Friday, April 12, in the University Theatre.
The evening of dance works from Lamar students will feature a variety of styles including jazz, musical theatre, modern, hip-hop and urban tap/step dance, as well as a tribute to legendary choreographer Bob Fosse. The Lamar Spirit Team will make two guest appearances.
“In a number of the pieces of choreography, we use outside influences to enhance the movements,” said Golden Wright, assistant professor and choreographer. “‘Periphery’ is about integrating things with dance to change the dynamic of it completely. It bridges the gap between dance, music and art.”
The concert will make use of fog with projectors, and black light with florescent paint to highlight and enhance the movement.
“In ‘A Different Kind of Canvas,’ pools of paint are placed offstage, and the dancers dip their hands and feet before each entrance,” said Wright, about one of the dances he choreographed. “The paint will get all over their bodies as they dance and partner. You’ll be able to see how the dance unfolds as the paint spreads.”
“Periphery” will feature music by Rihanna, Florence + The Machine and Gotye.
“We think people will enjoy this performance due to the variety of works,” said Wright. "It’s not the standard ‘dance recital,’ where you sit and watch a certain style. Lamar University's Department of Theatre and Dance brings something different to the table with our guest artists and choreographers, along with our talented Lamar students, which to bring it all to life.”
The University Theatre is located at 4400 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway on the Lamar campus.
Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for senior citizens, students and LU faculty/staff; and $7 for LU students.
