Morrissey sets May appearance on upcoming tour

BEAUMONT — For the fourth time in less than 18 months, British singer Morrissey is attempting to schedule a concert in Southeast Texas.

Morrissey, the former frontman for the Smiths, has announced a spring U.S. tour which will tentatively see him perform on Sunday, May 25 at the Julie Rogers Theater in downtown Beaumont. Prices have not been announced but tickets will go on sale at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21, at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Beaumont Civic Center box office. Special guest is Kristeen Young.

This is Morrissey’s fourth attempt to schedule a concert in Beaumont. The well-known English singer was originally scheduled to perform on Dec. 1, 2012, but rescheduled the show to Feb. 16, 2013, due to health issues with his mother who had to be hospitalized at the time.

He later rescheduled the second date after a doctor ordered him to rest for two weeks following a string of postponements in January and February 2013. He rescheduled to April 2013 and eventually canceled his entire tour due to medical issues.

Morrissey, whose name is actually Steven Patrick Morrissey, is a well known English singer and lyricist whose career began in the 1970’s punk scene where he formed the alternative rock band The Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr, in 1982. The band released its debut self-titled album in February 1984, which peaked and number two on the UK charts and remained on the charts for 33 weeks.

His solo career, which began in 1988 with the release of “Viva Hate,” has been nothing short of stellar, as critics and fans alike declare him to be one of the greatest lyricists in the world. The BBC has even referred to him as “one of the most influential figures in the history of British pop” and “Rolling Stone” magazine named his as one of the greatest vocalists of all time in a recent poll.

Morrissey’s upcoming tour, which will travel to approximately two dozen cities in the U.S., is be in support of his forthcoming as yet untitled album, his first since 2009’s “Years of Refusal.”

Morrissey’s recent book, “Autobiography,” became one of the fastest-selling memoirs in the UK upon its release in October 2013 and set first-week sales records when it entered the UK charts at No. 1, and remained there for five weeks.
