Special guests highlight ‘Free Comic Book Day’ at Lyons Den

VIDOR — This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, and one area business is going all out to make it a memorable event.

Lyons Den Comic Book and Game Store, located at 365 N. Main St. in Vidor, will participate in the 13th annual “Free Comic Book Day” event from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, May 3. The event is held each year in thousands of participating comic book shops across the United States and around the world. These businesses will give away select free comic books to any person who comes into the store.

This is the second year that Lyons Den Comic Book and Game Store, owned by brothers Kelly and Leonard Lyons, will participate in the “Free Comic Book Day.” The event, which is held on the first Saturday in May of each year, was such a success in 2013 that the Lyons’ couldn’t wait to make it bigger and better this year.

According to Kelly Lyons, “Free Comic Book Day” is designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes, whether it is the traditional action-packed superhero stories of Superman from DC, or even Marvel’s Infinity title, or science-fiction adventures of Star Wars. The appeal is not limited to only teens or adults, as comics like SpongeBob SquarePants, The Smurfs and Strawberry Shortcake are targeted for younger readers.

“We will have books for every age group and of every genre available on Saturday,” Lyons said of the event. “This is something people really enjoy and we are excited to be doing it again this year.”

In 2013, Lyons said approximately 500 people attended the “Free Comic Book Day” event at Lyons Den and he expects the same, if not more, this year.

“Last year was a big success, and we expect it to be again this Saturday,” Lyons added. “I anticipate we will be giving away as many as 7,000 comic books, so we will have plenty for everyone, but the fan favorites like Batman and Spider-man go quick.

“The comic book companies all participate in this together,” Lyons continued. “Each creates a specific book at a very low cost for this event, and they sell it to us at a very low cost which enables us to provide it free to the customers.”

Patrons will be able to see superheroes such as Wonder Woman and Batgirl and Storm, as well as supervillains like the Joker and Catwoman, who will all be passing out the free comic books on Saturday.

The highlight of this year’s “Free Comic Book Day” at Lyons Den is the special appearance by Matt Frank, who is the artist for “Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters,” “Godzilla: Legends,” the Transformers Collectors Club Magazine, and various other Transformers works as well as other publications.

Also appearing will be P.A. Douglas, a science-fiction horror writer from Southeast Texas with several survival horror novels, novellas, and short stories such as “Watchers,” “Rancid,” and “Killer Koala Bears from Another Dimension” to his credit.

Both men will be available for autographs and photos, as well as selling original pieces of work to the public.

“As a business owner, you want to bring in comic book creators and artists for special events because its the fans who buy their comics,” Lyons explained. “Not only is a special opportunity for the fans, but it is functions like this that allow these artists to make their money. That is a big reason a lot of them take part in comic book conventions and store appearances.”

The store will have a big sale to celebrate the event and to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Lyons Den Comic Book and Game Store, including many items at 20 percent off regular price and a 50 percent off sale of graphic novels and trade paperback books.

Lyons, a teacher with the Vidor Independent School District, said the original intent of “Free Comic Book Day” was to create a fun way to promote literacy. He still believes that to be a valid reason of the event.

“Comic books are fun, and can be a great source of entertainment,” he said. “So, in a way, this does help improve literacy by encouraging reading, even if it is a comic book.”

Lyons Den is open from noon - 10 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and noon - 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The store is closed on Monday.
