Local bands unite to support food bank

BEAUMONT — A yearly musical event which helps an area charity is back for its third year.

The “Solid Rock Summer III” concert will take place at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 22, at The Gig, which is located on the Crockett Street Entertainment District in downtown Beaumont. This show is suitable for all ages and admission is just one non-perishable food item. Bands scheduled to perform include Eviscerate the Proletariat, 70 Times 7, Behelit and Higher Domain.

According to Greg Hayes, the founder of the event and bassist and vocalist of Christian hard rock act 70 Times 7, the purpose of the event is to help keep food on the shelves of the Southeast Texas Food Bank in Beaumont.

“Our band started this event three years ago as a way to give back to the community,” Hayes said. “We chose the Southeast Texas Food Bank during the summer months because food donations drop off at this time of year since people have so many more things going on with their children out of school.”

Hayes said the event was more successful in 2013 than its debut year, so he hopes to continue the trend and make 2014 a record for the event as well.

“I’ve never personally counted every non-perishable good we have received, I know that last year we saw an increase in food donated because my entire back seat in my car was covered,” he added with a laugh.

Hayes said it is not necessary to attend Sunday’s event just to help people in need in your community.

“Either by donating or by volunteering, people can always help out,” he said.
