OCP enrolling now for youth summer workshop

ORANGE — The Orange Community Players have a slightly different option to the many education summer camps available to area students over the next several weeks.

The Orange Community Players is once again offering its Young People’s Theater Workshop this summer. This five week program will provide an opportunity for local children and young adults to learn about acting and performing arts. Students will experience a variety of theatrical workshops, including acting on stage and behind the scenes, as well as singing and dancing, costume design, set design and props. The program will conclude with a public performance of its summer production.

Workshop sessions begin Monday, June 16 and are held four days per week from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Final performances of the summer production will be July 17 - July 20.

According to Codie Vasquez of the Orange Community Players, there are many benefits to being part of the Young People’s Theater Workshop.

“Some of these kids might be a little shy, but they will get a lot out of this program” Vasquez explained. “It not only builds self-esteem and confidence, but it really builds their courage. That will make them better at public speaking or giving presentations. It’s not uncommon for them to build long friendships. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what your social status is because they all have theater in their blood and they bond with each other because of that.”

The program is limited to 60 students. Registration deadline is June 1. The cost is $25 and scholarships are available. E-mail for information.
