Cheers to those who supported Toy Coffee

— Cheers to everyone who came to this year’s Toy Coffee benefiting the Salvation Army held by the Service League of Orange Thursday at the home of Johnny and Cheryl Sargent. The league collected 406 toys and $3,093 in donations at the event, according to the Service League’s Cindy Lucia.

Jeers to government officials and activists attending the United Nations meeting on climate change. According to a recent report from Bloomberg News, the attendees of the conference will each produce 4.07 metric tons of carbon dioxide; they will cumulatively produce as much carbon dioxide as 20,350 mid-size cars traveling 7,457 miles each. It’s quite appalling that these people have the gall to lecture the rest of us on our own effects on the earth when their own “carbon footprint” is so large.

Cheers to the Salvation Army and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for making certain the toys they collect each year are not tainted with lead-based paint. It’s sad to see the toy collection get smaller, but safety comes first; and with the money raised by the Toy Coffee, more safe toys may be purchased.

Jeers to the federal government for its interference in the housing market with its plan to freeze interest rates. Even if this freeze is just a temporary one, the government has no business bailing people out for their bad decisions. As one blogger so astutely put it, buying things one cannot afford used to merit disapproval, not sympathy — much less a a cushion made of public money when the bottom falls out. If our government continues with such actions, instead of letting people face the consequences of their decisions, then we will only get more of those bad decisions — and more of our money thrown away subsidizing those bad decisions.

Jeers to the New York grocery store advertising hams for Hanukkah. Of course retailers wil look for any reason to run a special sale, but considering the fact that Jewish dietary laws forbid eating pork products, this particular marketing gimmick was more than a bit inappropriate. It would seem nothing is sacred to some people.
