Cardinals top Tigers in 8, 5-4

BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City's Cardinals knew after Tuesday's victory over the Silsbee Tigers they got a win they might not have deserved.

Hayden Guidry was not his normal stuff on the mound, the Cardinals made four errors and for much of the game Tyler Powell was the star of the game as the Tigers' starting pitcher.

The Cardinals in the end won 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a throwing error, the first error by Silsbee in the game.

Ashton Hunter laid down a bunt with Chase Shugart on second and Bryce Sampere on first. Silsbee's catcher threw the ball into right field and both runners were able to score to erase a 4-3 Tigers' lead.

“We had no business hanging around in this game,” Bridge City Coach Chad Landry said. “Powell gave us all we wanted. We had no clue what to do against him through six innings. It certainly wasn't pretty.”

Powell pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up only two hits while striking out 11 batters with four walks.

Powell was taken out of the game in the sixth inning and his absence was quickly felt.

Shugart led the inning off with a walk and with one out Hunter drew a walk to bring up Preston Pittman with the Tigers clinging to a 1-0 lead.

Pittman then destroyed a pitch by sending it over the left field fence and into the Bridge City tennis courts to give Bridge City a 3-1 lead.
