Leader wins 11 awards at Southeast Texas Press Club banquet

BEAUMONT — The Orange Leader editorial staff took home 11 awards this past Friday at the annual Southeast Texas Press Club Awards Banquet.

The Leader, which printed three editions a week the entire 2012 year, was listed in the daily division. This was a result of The Leader's E-Edition which still published the other two days' editions.

Tommy Mann Jr. won the lone first place of the night for The Leader in the News Organization Internet Video category for his video named “Annual Yearly Progress Region V Press Conference.”

Orange Leader's two news reporter, Mann and Dawn Burleigh, along with Editor Gabriel Pruett won nine combined second place awards and one third place award.

“The highlight of our night came when it was announced we finished second in overall excellence,” Pruett said. “It was quite an honor for our staff and I could not be more proud of the work my team does here at The Leader. Orange Leader readers can be proud to know their newspaper continues to write quality stories, take award-winning photographs and design newspapers with creative looks to each edition.”

Mann capped his night by winning for other awards.

His story “Rose City could land Greyhound bus terminal” won second in News Story of the Year. Mann's photograph titled “The flames were so high” won second in the Photo of the Year and his football photo titled “No doubt about it” won third and one titled “Last second goal lifts Pirates by Jags” won second in Sports Photo of the Year.

A photo titled “Beethoven’s Last Night” won second in Feature Photo of the Year.

Burleigh won a second and third place award in the Feature Story of the Year category.

Her story “Blast from the Past” won second while her story “Retelling of the Great Raid” took third.
