Black History Parade on schedule for Saturday

ORANGE — Grand Marshals for the Black History Parade on Saturday have been announced as Bettie M. Curtis and Andrew Hayes.

Both are educators in the Orange community with a total of over 90 years in education and both still active in he community and schools including having buildings named in their honor at the WO-S Elementary located off MLK Drive in Orange.

The event will start 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the WO-S Middle School located at 1402 W. Green Ave., Orange. The route of the parade is Green Ave. to Simmons and ends at Mt. Olive Baptist Church at 106 W Park Ave., Orange.

A brief Black History Program presentation will take place at the church after the parade. Members of the Orange African American Museum will be present to bring awareness of the progress in the development of the museum.

Black History Month was created in 1926 in the United States and originally the second week of February. The observation was expanded into a month long celebration in 1976 by the federal government.

“Black History is American History,” Reverend Franklin Gans said. “We are proud to be Americans where we are free to make our dreams a reality.”

Those participating in the parade need to arrive at 9 a.m. Sat. at WO-S Middle School.
