Texas Rice Festival celebrates 44th year

WINNIE, Texas — The biggest festival of the season begins today.

The 44th Annual Texas Rice Festival is being held from Wednesday, Oct. 2 through Sunday, Oct. 6, in Winnie-Stowell Park in Winnie. This year’s event promises more of what Southeast Texans have come to expect from this regional festival, including carnival rides, food, fun and music.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students. Admission is free for children ages 5 and younger, senior citizens ages 65 and older and all military personnel with valid identification.

The carnival gates open at 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, and then at 9 a.m., Friday and Saturday. Carnival wristbands are $25 and are available for purchase each day. Guests are reminded that open toe shoes are not allowed on any carnival rides, according to organizers.

This year’s music offers fans a sampling several well known and talented regional and local artists.

Headlining Wednesday’s schedule is the Randy Rogers Band. Also appearing are local and regional favorites such as Jamie Talbert and the Band of Demons, the Captain Legendary Band, Jobe Wilson Band and Bronco Jr.

Thursday’s lineup features Lee Brice as the main attraction. Other artists performing include Charles Bilal and The Solar System Band, Sister C, Crossing Ages and Honky Tonk Jones.

Friday night is the night you will want to wear your dancing shoes as the ever-popular Wayne Toups and ZydeCajun return for another spectacular headlining event. Also appearing are the .07 Blues Band, Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie, Crossroads and Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys.

If you were a child of the ’80s, then be sure to stick around on Saturday night for featured attraction, The Molly Ringwalds. Other artists performing on Saturday include Josh Fuller and Dirt & Diesel, Mid-Life Crisis, High Street, The Bellamy Brothers, Book of Days, Katey Whitney and The Draw and The Continentals.

Along with the music and carnival attractions, the festival offers several other activities, including a livestock show, horseshoe tournament, washer tournament, a rice cooking contest, photography contest, welding contest, art contest and more.
