Students to learn about ‘Myths, Journeys and Heroic Traditions’ Youth Education Concerts

BEAUMONT — The Symphony of Southeast Texas (SOST) presents its annual Youth Education Concerts on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. each day, at the Julie Rogers Theatre. Over 3,500 local students are expected to attend the free concerts and gain exposure to a live performance of a symphony orchestra.

This year’s theme is “Myths, Journeys, and Heroic Traditions,” which will focus on how composers tell some of the greatest mythical stories in history through music. Musical selections for the concert include Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter,” Julius Fucik’s “Entrance of the Gladiators,” Igor Stravinsky’s “Firebird Suite Finale,” and John Williams’ “Harry’s Wondrous World.”

“All of the composers represented are the masters of their particular genre,” said SOST Music Director Chelsea Tipton. “The common denominator is fantasy and myths.”

Tipton will educate the students throughout the program on the pieces chosen and the orchestra overall. These concerts often represent many students’ first time attending a live musical performance. Students attending the concerts range from kindergarten through 12th grade and are from school districts all across Southeast Texas.

For more information on the SOST Youth Education Concerts, contact the Symphony office at 409-892-2257.
