Recovery group holds fundraising event

ORANGE — Sometimes one needs another option to reach success.

Winner’s Circle Freedom Fighter’s Orange is seeking to raise funds to go to Klein, Texas to be chartered in as well as help pay quarterly dues for the group.

The recovery group organized approximately 2 1/2 months ago and nominated a board 2 weeks ago.

The organization is a peer support recovery network used in addition to groups such as Alcoholic Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

The difference is the group is the members are ex-offenders.

Shilo Sheppard, 33, said it helps to have people one can talk with about issues and not worry about being judged.

“It helps change the thinking of a criminal mind,” Sheppard said.

Beth Crabtree AAS, LCDC, CCJP with Spindletop Center, 4303 North Tejas Parkway in Orange, said there are 54 thinking errors one may have.

“This program helps clients finds ways to stay sober, clean for the long term,” Crabtree said. “We want people to know there is another option locally for long term recovery.”

The fundraising event will be Saturday, April 6, in Big Lot’s parking lot. The group will sell barbecue plates for $5 each.
