Ribbon cutting scheduled for train depot

ORANGE — Bridge City, Greater Orange Area and Bridge City Chamber of Commerce join together for a ribbon cutting for the Southern Pacific Depot 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 19 at the corner of Green Avenue and 11th Street in Orange.

Non profit organization Friends of the Orange Depot will kick off the Pave a Path to Your Depot fundraising campaign during the event.

The engraved bricks will be used for pathways and ramps around the depot after the renovations.

The bricks are available in two sizes, 4x8 for $50 and 8x8 for $100. Each brick can have a maximum of 16 characters per line, with a two line limit for the smaller bricks and a five line limit for the larger ones.

Friends volunteer and Chairman of the Brick Project JDavid Derosier will be available at the event for any questions.

Funds from the bricks will help restore the 19-2 Southern Pacific Depot which has fallen into despair including damage to the roof during Hurricane Rita in 2005.

Plans for the building include a museum featuring the history of industries which contributed to the growth of Orange, a reception area, a gift shop and a conference room. The conference room will be available for use by local civic organizations.

Friends of the Orange Depot plan to restore the depot so it may become the ‘Gateway to the Historic District’ of Orange thus encouraging tourism and stimulating economic growth along the corridor.

The public is invited to attend.
