American Legion election

Plate lunch fundraiser

American Legion Post 49, 108 Green Ave. in Orange, will hold a plate lunch fundraiser from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Thursday, May 8. Cost is $8 and meal consists of fried fish, cole slaw, green beans, potato salad, bread and dessert. Walk-in’s welcome and delivery available. VISD Arts Afternoon

Student artwork will be on display from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, May 8, at the Vidor ISD Administrative Annex, 200 S. Archie St. in Vidor featuring art from Vidor ISD students. Also, state band and choir competitors will be performing. Refreshments will be provided.

Scottish Society

The Scottish Society of Southeast Texas will meet Thursday, May 8 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 1350 23rd St. at Gladys in Beaumont with a covered dish supper at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program. Saturday Adventure Series

Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, 2111 W. Park Ave. in Orange, will hold its next Saturday Adventure Series: “Build a Bat House,” from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., Saturday, May 10, for ages 10 and older, where guests will make a bat house and learn about different bat species. Flag Ceremony

A formal flag raising ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10 at Claybar’s Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange as Boy Scouts and Cub Scots from Pack 290, along with members of VFW Post 2775, honor all deceased veterans in the cemetery’s Field of Honor. The public is invited.


Friends of the Orange Depot are selling bricks for the depot. The bricks are available in two sizes, 4 x 8 for $50 and 4 x 8 for $100. Each brick can have a maximum of 16 characters per line with a limit of two lines for the smaller bricks and five lines for the larger bricks. Visit for more information

Retired Teachers of Orange County will hold its final meeting of school year at 11 a.m., Monday, May 12 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 401 37th St. in Orange. Speaker is Dr. Pauline Hargrove, superintendent of LC-M CISD. A covered dish luncheon will be served.

Sopisticats Spring Show

The Orangefield High School Drill Team proudly presents the 2014 “Sophisticats’ Spring Show” at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, May 15 at the Jefferson Theatre on Fannin Street in Beaumont. The event will feature the current team members, the 2014-2015 members, the OHS drum line, and additional student performances. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10. Mother’s Day Out

First Baptist Church of Orange is registering now for its Fall Mother’s Day Out. We are a Christian educational program for preschoolers ages 18 months to five years. Children will prepare for kindergarten while learning about God and His son, Jesus. Classes will be from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. The 11th annual tribute to Orange County Veterans will be held at 6 p.m., Sunday, May 25 at Heritage Veterans Memorial Plaza, 3810 MLK Drive in Orange. Speaker is Capt. Donald Root, USN (Ret).
