Stark Museum of Art to host ‘BANNED: Night at the Museum'

ORANGE — The Stark Museum of Art invites adults 21 and older to experience art after dark and celebrate Banned Book Week at “BANNED: Night at the Museum,” from 8 p.m. - 11 p.m., Friday, Sept. 27. A valid I.D. must be presented for entry by each attendee, and a cover charge will apply.

“BANNED: Night at the Museum” will be an evening of great live music, with opportunities to create and experience art. Nationally-recognized Beaumont band Mad Maude & the Hatters will lead the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party inside the Museum’s lobby, filling the Museum with an eclectic mix of doo-wop, Motown and their signature three-part harmonies. Visitors can join the party and will be invited to create their own whimsical hat, fascinator hairpiece, or bowtie during the evening.

Professional artist and bookbinder Tony Vela will be on hand to demonstrate the paper marbling process and engage visitors in collaborative art-making. Using special tools and materials, visitors will be able to float paint on the surface of a water solution and create unique designs, which can then be printed and taken home.

Inside the Museum, visitors will have the opportunity to see the special exhibition “Tales and Travels.” This exhibition reveals artists and authors behind the vivid images, featured first-edition books, and written travel accounts. It showcases objects from the Stark Museum of Art, The W.H. Stark House and the Stark Foundation Archives. In the exhibition, visitors may add their own drawings and create Model Magic wax seals. Spotlight tours highlighting historically-banned books on view will take place every 15 minutes, as attendees will be encouraged to discover beloved books that may have been banned in the past.

All Museum galleries will be open for viewing, and visitors are invited to participate in a text message scavenger hunt throughout the Museum to win a prize.

Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks will be served at the event and are included with admission. Wine and beer will also be available at a cash-only bar.

General admission is $10 per person. Admission for named members at the SCV Individual, Dual/Couple, and Family Membership levels is $8. Admission is free for named SCV members at the Star and Crescent Moon levels. Membership cards must be presented at the door along with I.D. for discounted or free entry by named members.

“‘Night at the Museum’ offers visitors ages 21 and older the chance to get to know the Museum and connect with art during an after-hours event,” says Jennifer Restauri, Educator for Studio and Family Programs. “Whether you’re a college student, a young professional or young at heart, we encourage you to come out and enjoy live music, create art with a professional artist, and leave with an artwork that you will be proud to frame and display.”
